
Emerson once admonished readers “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” The taxi driver on our first day in Rome apparently reads Emerson. During the short trek from our hotel to the Coliseum I believe he hopped three curbs, zipped along the sidewalk a half mile in a congested area and displaced several dozen startled tourists, cussing loudly at other drivers he deemed in his way.
