Success stories in Saxony-Anhalt’s pharmaceutical sector

Probiodrug AG, based in Halle (Saale), has raised $54 million for its unique treatment for Alzheimer’s treatment of Alzheimers disease. Investors include venture capital from U.S. bio-tech giant Biogen Idec, BB Biotech, Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners and Life Sciences Partners. Probiodrug has developed and patented a unique warping approach for Alzheimer’s, which reduces the development of protein deposits in the brain by up to 80 percent.

Saxony-Anhalt is proving to be a successful location for the pharmaceutical industry. Turnover has almost doubled since 2002, and around 3,500 people are now employed in the sector. This success should continue as more investments are announced. Dessau-Roßlau–based IDT Biologika, for example, announced it will invest more than €10 million in additional manufacturing plants. At the beginning of the year, the pharmaceutical researchers established their first company in the United States. In 2008, IDT was honored in Philadelphia with the “Facility of the year Award” in the “Operational Excellence” prize category by the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering at that association’s INTERPHEX conference. The prize was awarded for IDT’s new production building for human viral vaccinations. According to the Jury, the facility combines scientific and technological progress with openness and transparency in sterile production.

Position Summary:

Manages the operations staff including training and monitoring performance issues. Communicates with Chief Engineers regarding status of projects and assignments.

Promotes a team environment and provides work direction. Ensures the accuracy of work product and the departmental deadlines are met.

Responsible for development and training to all field and management staff in areas of operational and technical requirements on the account. This is to include service performance, technology, safety and compliance, cost savings initiatives, and regulatory requirements.

Oversees all site operations and new projects including the identification of capital improvement projects, including cost analysis to be utilized in the preparation of capital budgets. Travels to each location for project management issues.

Prepares and manages the department budget.
