20 Years of German Unity
Chemical operations in the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt are regarded as pioneers of the global restructuring process of the chemical industry. Since the beginning of the 1990's, around €15 billion has been invested in Saxony-Anhalt's biggest chemical locations in Leuna, Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Schkopau and Zeitz, for the redevelopment and modernization of infrastructure and production facilities.
Today, investing in innovation is the focus. For example, the state, the federal government and the Fraunhofer Society in Leuna have built a new, €50-million chemical-biotechnology center where crude oil will be tested to see if it can be replaced on an industrial scale by renewable raw materials such as straw, wood and microalgae. Construction of a new Fraunhofer Technology Center in Schkopau has begun, with around €60 million being invested there. Among other things, researchers will work on silicon crystallization and methods of manufacturing thinner silicon wafers, as well as coating and module manufacturing technologies.
Chemicals and plastics manufacturing are among the leading industrial sectors in Saxony-Anhalt. Together, they account for more than one fifth of overall employment in the manufacturing industry.
