Expansion to increase concrete tower
production in Saxony-Anhalt
WEC Turmbau GmbH, exclusive supplier of the wind turbine builders ENERCON, is expanding its production site in Magdeburg. This means more concrete towers for wind turbines can be built in the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt in the future. The €35-million expansion will create approximately 100 jobs. Production capacity will increase from 15 to 25 concrete tower segments per day. In addition, motorway, rail and waterway connections at the new site in the Hansehafen will make distribution of the concrete segments easier in the future.
“Saxony-Anhalt has become a top location for renewable energy in just a few years. Around 20,000 people in this area now work in this industry,” says Trade and Industry Secretary Dr Reiner Haseloff.
In Saxony-Anhalt, almost every third kilowatt hour of generated electricity is now obtained from renewable energy sources. Wind power supplies the largest contribution with 71 percent. Biomass, with a share of 25 percent, takes second place with its contribution to environmentally and climate-friendly electricity production.

In 2007, around 6.2 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity were generated from renewable energy in Saxony-Anhalt. That is 51 percent more than the previous year. The amount of overall electricity generation in Saxony-Anhalt amounted to 32 percent, which means almost every third kilowatt hour was obtained from renewable energy.
Wind power supplied the largest contribution with 71 per cent.
