100 containers from A for Aken to B for Baltimore

How does a 250-metre-long coating, embossing and printing machine for producing PVC flooring get from Köthen in Saxony-Anhalt to America? That is the question employees at Sondermaschinenbau Köthen GmbH (www.smbk.de) recently faced. The company delivered such a system to Armstrong, one of the world's largest producers of PVC flooring, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In total, 100 shipments survived a container ship journey on the Aken-Hamburg to Baltimore route and on to Lancaster.

The value of this machine is about US$20 million, or €14 million. Saxony-Anhalt has a large stake in the success of this order, having provided a guarantee for SMBK's partner company Kleinwerfers Kunststoffanlagen (KKA), which was also involved. A commitment to quality, good assembly conditions in Weißandt-Gölzau and efforts by the company and the state resulted in the Köthen-based company outdoing well-known competing companies for this business.
