This week's SiteNet Dispatch brings you fresh reporting from the July issue of Site Selection:

Second Look

  • When we reported on the early 2009 selection of Manhattan, Kan., as the site of the new $451-million National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF), six years' worth of documentation and analysis appeared pretty thorough (see the story for a link to those documents). But it's not thorough enough for the Government Accountability Office, whose critique of that decision by the Dept. of Homeland Security, leaked to The Washington Post, has prompted a House subcommittee hearing that is taking place today. The hearing comes three weeks after Senate approval of initial funding for the project.

U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts (right) and the rest of the Kansas congressional delegation this week called concerns over the NBAF location in Tornado Alley "disingenuous."

"Why do I read Site Selection?"

As a dedicated community and economic researcher, it's in my blood to want to compare our metro and state to everywhere else. The well-designed Site Selection rankings frequently validate Greater Des Moines' economic development efforts, at the same time offering that all-important outside opinion of our area's caliber for business and life. But, honestly, who could resist opening a magazine with Bob Gravlee's whimsical Governor's Cup portraits on the cover? They put a smile on my face every bit as big as a good ranking!
