  • Going Totally Green - in Antarctica:
Sitting atop stilts like some giant, gleaming insect in the Antarctic sun, Belgium's Princess Elisabeth Station (pictured left) looks like a minor construction miracle. But there's something even more striking about this facility: It's the first-ever polar base operating entirely on renewable energies, using a combination of wind and solar power. • 'You Have to Want It':"Constructing the first zero-emission research station in the Antarctic shows that the necessary know-how and technology actually exist," contends Alain Hubert (pictured), president and co-founder of the International Polar Foundation. "If it’s possible to build a zero-emission facility in the extreme conditions of Antarctica, the same must be possible anywhere else in the world. All you have to do is want it"

  • One Answer, My Friend, Is Blowin' in the . . . : During the summers, the nine wind turbines at the Princess Elisabeth Station provide two-thirds of the electric power for the facility. During the winters, the turbines provide all of the station's electric juice.

That's One Big . . . Er, Bird: Yes, that uncommon contraption pictured on the left actually is an enormous chicken, seven stories' worth of sheet metal, soaring to a height of 56 feet (17 meters). This eccentric structure has become an iconic landmark in a major U.S. metropolitan area.

See if you can name the suburban city that the "Big Chicken" calls home - and find out why it's lasted there for 46 years in our new "Where in the World?"
